Is depression less rampant in India than other countries?

Yes,
As mental illness is a Taboo subject we just don’t realize it.
India is the most depressed country in the world according to the world health organisation. According to the World Health Organization, India is one of the most depressed countries in the world with a whopping 36% of Indians likely to suffer from major depression at some point in their lives. We can talk about dengue and swine flu but for some reason, we refuse to talk about depression.
Over 1 lakh people on an average kill themselves in India every year and these are the only reported figures of depression and suicide.
Does India care?
India does not have enough doctors: there's a shortfall of 8,500 psychiatrists, 6,750 psychologists, 22,600 psychiatric social workers and 2,100 psychiatric nurses. The nation has not even bothered to find out how many people actually suffer from mental illness in more than six decades of Independence. It's only with the WHO labelling the country as the "most depressed nation", with a 36 per cent depression rate, that alarm bells have started to sound.
