How do I study body language?

We all know that communication is 70% nonverbal; hence to have a knowledge of Body language gives you an edge over the others in real life. It often protects you and warn you.
We all see many people everyday, but observation is different from mere watching.
These are the steps I used to improve my skills. I needed them in my profession.
  1. As a first step buy a good book on body language and learn the basics. There are youtube videos as well.
2. To learn body language you need to have excellent observation skill.
3. Just observation won’t help you need to analyze and interpret
‘Practice makes perfection’
Now you have practice and experiment with the information you possess. Have a small note pad to jot down points.
But there is a problem if you start observing people they will know that you are observing. People might see it as staring. If you are a girl and the one you observed is a guy, you can be in trouble.
If you are you are a guy chances for you to be treated as a jerk is there(experience).
After some initial set back I came up with few solutions to tackle it(it may sound bit odd)
  • As first step start observing animals like cat,cow or insects.
  • Wear a spectacle which has glare(without anti-reflection), so that people won’t realize you are observing them.
  • Do not stare or anything which gives them a clue; be natural. Specially don’t show it in your eyes
  • Wear low profile dress code, not showy; avoid unwanted attention.
  • Use a headphone, magazine to act as if you are not observing.(don’t play music or actually read as it will affect your focus)
  • Railway station is the best place to experiment, as people move in a straight line, they won’t move in a unpredictable direction. You get 15 -40 second to observe.
  • Do not turn your head, only eyes should move.
Caution
  • Never say your deductions to your peers, people don’t like being observed they will abandon you(most cases).
  • Don’t judge people using this knowledge, just analyze.
  • Don’t make abrupt conclusions, you may go wrong.
