A friend of mine is depressed because she thinks she's ugly (and she really is), without lying how can I make her feel better?

For solving the issue you need understand what it is.
It could be a case ofBody dysmorphic disorder
BDD is a body-image disorder characterized by persistent and intrusive preoccupations with an imagined or slight defect in one's appearance.
People with BDD can dislike any part of their body, although they often find fault with their hair, skin, nose, chest, or stomach. In reality, a perceived defect may be only a slight imperfection or nonexistent. But for someone with BDD, the flaw is significant and prominent, often causing severe emotional distress and difficulties in daily functioning.
BDD most often develops in adolescents and teens, and research shows that it affects men and women almost equally. About one percent of the U.S. population has BDD.
What you could do as a friend.
  1. Encourage them to do some charity work.
  2. Be prepared for ignorance.
  3. Realize that understanding is a huge element of healing.
  4. Allow the suffer to carry out their more minor and less harmful habits/coping mechanisms.
  5. Encourage them to stay busy & productive individually.
  6. Encourage the sufferer to stay social.
  7. Encourage perseverance with both jobs and schoolwork.
  8. Counseling/antidepressants.
Once you are able to make her realize the issue you have won the battle if needed treatment is available. The treatments that appear most effective are certain medications (serotonin-reuptake inhibitors) and a type of therapy known as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT).
